Sauti said: A Brāhmaṇa and his wife had entered his throat and began to burn the bird's throat like a piece of coal. The giant bird said,

"O best among the twice-born! Come out of my open mouth quickly. A Brāhmaṇa will never be killed by me, even if he is always associated with those who commit sin."
"हे द्विजों में श्रेष्ठ! जल्दी से मेरे खुले मुंह से बाहर आ जाओ। एक ब्राह्मण को मेरे द्वारा कभी नहीं मारा जाएगा, भले ही वह हमेशा पाप करने वालों के साथ जुड़ा हो।"
When Gāruḍa said this, the Brāhmaṇa replied, "My wife is a niṣāda. Let her come out with me."
जब गरुड़ ने यह कहा, तो ब्राह्मण ने उत्तर दिया, "मेरी पत्नी एक निषाद है। उसे मेरे साथ बाहर आने दो।"
Gāruḍa said: "Take the niṣāda with you and come out immediately. Save yourself, before you are digested by the energy in my stomach."
गरुड़ ने कहा: "निषाद को अपने साथ ले जाओ और तुरंत बाहर आओ। इससे पहले कि तुम मेरे पेट की ऊर्जा से पच जाओ, अपने आप को बचा लो।"

Sauti said: Thereupon, the Brāhmaṇa emerged with the niṣāda woman. Praising Gāruḍa, he went to the country where he wished to go.
सौति ने कहा: उसके बाद, ब्राह्मण निशाद महिला के साथ उभरा। वह गरुड़ की स्तुति करता हुआ उस देश में गया, जहाँ वह जाना चाहता था।
When the Brāhmaṇa and his wife emerged, the king of birds, swift as the mind, stretched his wings and rose up into the sky.
जब ब्राह्मण और उसकी पत्नी बाहर आए, तो मन के समान तेज़ पक्षी राजा ने अपने पंख फैलाए और आकाश में उड़ गया।
He then saw his father, who asked him about his welfare and he replied, "I have been sent by the snakes to steal the supreme somā. I shall bring it today, to free my mother from her slavery.

My mother instructed me to eat the niṣāda-s. But even after eating them in their thousands, my hunger is not yet satisfied.
मेरी माँ ने मुझे निषाद-स खाने का निर्देश दिया। परंतु उन्हें हजारों की संख्या में खाने के बाद भी मेरी भूख अभी तक शांत नहीं हुई है।

तस्माद्भोक्तव्यमपरं भगवन्प्रदिशस्व मे यद्भुक्त्वामृतमाहर्तुं समर्थः स्यामहं प्रभो
O illustrious one! O lord! Show me some other food that I can eat, so that I am strong enough to steal the amṛtā."
हे महामहिम! हे भगवान! मुझे कोई अन्य भोजन दिखाओ जिसे मैं खा सकूं, ताकि मैं अमृत चुराने के लिए पर्याप्त मजबूत हो जाऊं।"
Kāśyapa said: "In ancient times, there was a maharṣi named Vibhāvasu. He became angry very easily. He had a younger brother named Supratīka, who was a great ascetic.
कश्यप ने कहा: "प्राचीन काल में, विभावसु नाम के एक महर्षि थे। वह बहुत जल्दी क्रोधित हो जाते थे। उनका सुप्रतीक नाम का एक छोटा भाई था, जो एक महान तपस्वी था।
That great sage was unwilling to maintain their wealth jointly with his brother and Supratīka always spoke of dividing it.
वह महान ऋषि अपने भाई के साथ अपनी संपत्ति संयुक्त रूप से रखने के लिए तैयार नहीं थे और सुप्रतीक हमेशा इसे विभाजित करने की बात करते थे।
After some time, Vibhāvasu told his brother Supratīka, 'It is from delusion that many wish to divide common property. Once it has been divided, they are deluded from love of wealth.

Ignorant from selfishness, enmity is created, though there is a disguise of friendship.

Others, knowing them estranged in property matters, increase the enmity on other matters and divided relatives meet their downfall. Absolute ruin soon comes to those who are separated.
दूसरे लोग उन्हें संपत्ति के मामले में अलग-थलग जानकर दूसरे मामलों में दुश्मनी बढ़ाते हैं और बंटे हुए रिश्तेदार अपने पतन का कारण बनते हैं। जो लोग अलग हो जाते हैं उनका शीघ्र ही पूर्ण विनाश हो जाता है।

तस्माच्चैव विभागार्थं न प्रशंसन्ति पण्डिताः गुरुशास्त्रे निबद्धानामन्योन्यमभिशङ्किनाम्
That is the reason why learned ones never approve partition among brothers. When divided, they do not have any respect for the sacred texts or preceptors.
यही कारण है कि विद्वान लोग भाइयों में बँटवारा कभी स्वीकार नहीं करते। विभाजित होने पर, उनके मन में पवित्र ग्रंथों या उपदेशकों के प्रति कोई सम्मान नहीं रह जाता है।

नियन्तुं न हि शक्यस्त्वं भेदतो धनमिच्छसि यस्मात्तस्मात्सुप्रतीक हस्तित्वं समवाप्स्यसि
O Supratīka! You are beyond my control. Disregarding my advice and out of love for riches, you wish for a partition. I curse you that you will become an elephant.
हे सुप्रतीक! तुम मेरे नियंत्रण से बाहर हो. तुम मेरी सलाह की उपेक्षा करके तथा धन-प्रेम के कारण बँटवारा चाहते हो। मैं तुम्हें शाप देता हूं कि तुम हाथी बन जाओगे।
Thus cursed, Supratīka told Vibhāvasu, "You will become a tortoise that lives in the water."
इस प्रकार शापित होकर, सुप्रतीक ने विभावसु से कहा, "तुम पानी में रहने वाला कछुआ बन जाओगे।"
Cursed by each other and their minds deluded by desire, they became an elephant and a tortoise, animals of low birth.
एक-दूसरे से शापित होने के कारण और उनका मन कामना से भ्रमित होकर हाथी और कछुआ, निम्न कुल के पशु बन गये।
Boastful of their strengths and sizes, as earlier, they have continued in their vice of enmity towards each other,

living in this huge lake. Look at one of them, the large and handsome elephant, come towards this lake now.

Hearing his trumpeting, the giant tortoise that lives under water rises out of the lake, agitating its waters.

On seeing him, the valorous elephant curls his trunk and rushes into the water, violently moving his tusks, trunk, tail and feet.
उसे देखते ही, वीर हाथी अपनी सूंड मोड़ लेता है और अपने दाँत, सूंड, पूँछ और पैरों को जोर-जोर से हिलाते हुए पानी में भाग जाता है।
The water that is full of fishes is agitated. The valorous tortoise also raises its head and comes up to fight.
मछलियों से भरा जल व्याकुल है। वीर कछुआ भी अपना सिर उठाता है और लड़ने के लिए ऊपर आता है।
The elephant is six yojanā-s in height and double that in length. The tortoise is three yojanā-s in height and ten yojanā-s in circumference.
हाथी की ऊंचाई छह योजन है और लंबाई उससे दोगुनी है। कछुए की ऊंचाई तीन योजन और परिधि दस योजन है।
These two are maddened at the prospect of fighting each other and wish to kill each other. Eat them up and swiftly accomplish the task you wish to perform."
ये दोनों एक-दूसरे से लड़ने की संभावना से पागल हो गए हैं और एक-दूसरे को मारना चाहते हैं। इन्हें खाओ और जो काम तुम करना चाहते हो उसे तेजी से पूरा करो।"
Sauti said: Hearing his father's words, the bird swooped down from the sky and swiftly grasped the elephant and the tortoise, one in each claw.
सौती ने कहा: अपने पिता के शब्दों को सुनकर, पक्षी आकाश से नीचे झपटा और तेजी से हाथी और कछुए को पकड़ लिया, प्रत्येक पंजे में।
The bird then flew high up into the sky. It went to the tīrtha named Ālamba and saw many celestial trees there.

ते भीताः समकम्पन्त तस्य पक्षानिलाहताः न नो भञ्ज्यादिति तदा दिव्याः कनकशाखिनः
Struck by the wind raised by his wings, the trees trembled in fear. Those celestial trees had golden branches and were scared that these would be broken.
उसके पंखों से उठी हवा से पेड़ डर के मारे कांपने लगे। उन दिव्य वृक्षों की सुनहरी शाखाएँ थीं और उन्हें डर था कि ये टूट जाएँगी।
Seeing that the trees bore fruit and shoots capable of granting all desires and that they were quivering in fright, the bird went to other trees, incomparable in colour and shape.
यह देखकर कि पेड़ों पर फल और अंकुर लगे हैं जो सभी इच्छाओं को पूरा करने में सक्षम हैं और वे डर से कांप रहे थे, पक्षी अन्य पेड़ों पर चला गया, जो रंग और आकार में अतुलनीय थे।
Those giant trees had fruit of gold and silver, with branches of lapis lazuli. They were washed by the waters of the ocean.
उन विशाल वृक्षों पर सोने और चाँदी के फल थे, और लापीस लाजुली की शाखाएँ थीं। वे समुद्र के पानी से धोए गए थे।
A giant sandalwood tree stood there and spoke to the best of the birds, as he was swiftly swooping down with the speed of the mind.
वहाँ एक विशाल चंदन का पेड़ खड़ा था और वह सबसे अच्छे पक्षियों से बात कर रहा था, जैसे वह मन की गति से तेजी से झपट्टा मार रहा था।
"Descend on my giant branch, which extends for one hundred yojanā-s, and eat the elephant and the tortoise."

Then the supreme among the birds, as giant as a mountain, descended swiftly on the tree, shaking the branches that housed a thousand birds, and broke the branch that was full of leaves.
